The Stone

A stone with a fine-grained greenish-gray groundmass. Scattered through  it are more or less abundant white crystals, generally several millimeters in size. Cut against the grain, the material seems to be composed of closely alternating layers of greenish-gray and white, very continuous laterally and straight. From the lithological standpoint the stone is a gneiss.

The presence of dark gray bands, patches, white chains and black threads can diminish the material’s aesthetic quality. Depending on the type of product, the presence of rust stains can be either a defect or an asset. Testing done by the Turin Polytechnic stone laboratories. The physical-mechanical test results were within the norms typical for gneiss, a category that includes Pietra di Luserna.

Its resistance to breaking under compression after the frost-thaw cycle puts it in the category of materials insensitive to frost.
